How the rate of news genre TV viewing has changed during the war

The current events in the world, in particular, the Russia-Ukraine war, have significantly changed the reality of both the world and Georgian television space. Since February 24, after Russia first attacked Ukraine and launched military operations, more and more people in Georgia have become interested and dependent on the daily news. Consequently, the duration of news and political genre TV shows has also increased. Compared to the period 30.01.2022-23.02.2022, from February 24, the duration of daily news programs and political talk shows in the entire television space increased by 20%, and the TV viewing of this genre - by 109%. During the war increased the percentage of viewers of the younger generation, who began to spend more time on TV screens watching news programs and political talk shows. Men between the ages of 18-44 had a 95% increase, while women over the same age had a 100% increase. Viewing programs of this genre has also increased in Tbilisi and in the region. From February 24, compared to the period 30.01.2022-23.02.2022 in Tbilisi, the viewing of this genre has increased by 77%, and in the region by 75%.

TV channels are operating in emergency mode, devoting much more time to daily news programs and political genre talk shows compared to the period 30.01.2022-23.02.2022. The duration of the programs of this genre on "Rustavi 2" increased by 76% and the viewing of this genre also increased by 103%. The rate of viewing news programs and political genre talk shows increased by 150% on "Formula" and 112% on "TV Pirveli".The duration of news genre programs on "Mtavari Arkhi" increased by 64%, while the rate of news programs increased by 94%. As for “Imedi TV”, the channel increased the duration of their news programs by 51% compared to the period 30.01.2022-23.02.2022, and the viewing of this genre has increased by 63%.

 

The data is based on Tbilisi and 6 cities of Georgia (Rustavi, Gori, Batumi, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Poti), where “Tri Media Intelligence” operates TAM panel. Data is taken from the population above 18 years including guests and time shifting in the households. Period: 30.01.2022-20.03.2022.
